Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has emerged as President-elect of the Nigerian Bar Association following the conclusion of the association’s 2026 election. Her victory makes her the second woman in the history of the NBA to occupy the organisation’s highest leadership position. Badejo-Okusanya received 12,317 votes, accounting for 47.18 percent of the 26,106 valid votes recorded in the election. She defeated two other contenders and was the only female candidate in the presidential race. Voting was conducted electronically for 24 hours, opening at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday and closing at 7:34 a.m. on Sunday. The outcome was declared shortly after the voting portal was shut. The election took place amid controversy surrounding the temporary detention of the managing director of the technology company engaged to manage the electronic voting process. The incident prompted the NBA to convene an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council. Following deliberations, the council resolved that the election should continue as planned. The association later announced that the detained official had been released. In its reaction, the NBA expressed concern that the development could cast doubt on the credibility of the process. It also warned against any action that could compromise the independence of the association or disrupt its internal elections. Badejo-Okusanya is expected to take over from the incumbent president when the current leadership completes its tenure. She will assume responsibility for steering the affairs of the NBA, the foremost professional body representing lawyers across Nigeria.
