The Confederation of African Football has confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations will move from its traditional two-year schedule to a four-year cycle beginning with the 2028 edition.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe disclosed that the continental football body had received several “exciting bids” from countries interested in hosting the 2028, 2032 and 2036 tournaments.

According to Reuters, Motsepe did not reveal the identities of all the bidders or provide further details about the selection process.

Before the new schedule takes effect, the 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17. Motsepe expressed confidence that the East African tournament would succeed despite concerns over preparations and stadium infrastructure.

Qualifiers for the 24-team competition are expected to begin in September and conclude in March.

Under the revised calendar, another AFCON will be staged in 2028, followed by subsequent editions in 2032 and 2036. The change marks a major departure from the biennial format that has defined Africa’s leading international football competition for decades.
