Nigerian social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has rejected the description of himself as an activist, saying he prefers to be regarded as an “online police officer” committed to promoting accountability.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE 360 on Wednesday, VeryDarkMan said his interventions on social media were aimed at drawing attention to alleged injustice, oppression and misconduct involving individuals, businesses and public institutions.

“I am not an activist,” he said, adding that the description “online police officer” better reflects the role he believes he plays in society. He also maintained that matters affecting members of the public were of concern to him, declaring that “everyone’s business is my business.”

The controversial commentator also addressed a recent police invitation directing him to appear in Lagos. He said he would not honour what he described as a malicious invitation, arguing that he resides in Abuja and should be allowed to respond to the authorities there.

VeryDarkMan maintained that he was not attempting to evade the police but wanted the invitation to be handled through what he considered a fair and appropriate procedure. His comments were presented as his personal allegations and position on the matter.

On politics, VeryDarkMan said Nigerians should participate actively in political discussions and governance because decisions taken by political leaders affect the entire population.

However, he ruled out joining partisan politics or contesting for elective office, insisting that he would not become a politician even if given the opportunity.

He also expressed regret over his widely publicised physical confrontation with media personality Mr Jollof aboard an aircraft. VeryDarkMan admitted that his conduct during the incident was wrong and apologised for his involvement in the altercation.

Speaking about his relationship with Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, VeryDarkMan said their friendship could no longer remain the same following recent comments and disagreements between them. He, however, continued to describe his broader mission as one focused on challenging injustice and defending people he believes have been unfairly treated.

VeryDarkMan has remained one of Nigeria’s most controversial social media figures, attracting support for his public interventions while also facing criticism over his methods, statements and confrontations with individuals and institutions.
