Hundreds of trailers, fuel tankers and other articulated vehicles have been stranded along the Ifaki–Oye–Ilupeju axis of Ekiti State following the collapse of a section of the federal road at Ikupeju-Ekiti.

The road failure has caused severe gridlock on the busy route, leaving some drivers trapped for about 48 hours and disrupting the movement of people and goods into and out of the state.

Truck drivers affected by the congestion said they had spent days on the road, with little indication of when traffic would return to normal. Residents of surrounding communities have also struggled to enter or leave the area.

The presence of several fuel tankers in the gridlock has raised serious safety concerns. Residents fear that a collision, fuel leakage or fire outbreak could endanger lives and property along the route.

Former senator representing Ekiti North Senatorial District, Ayo Arise, who visited the affected area, described the situation as alarming and called for immediate intervention by the Federal Ministry of Works.

Arise warned that the continued delay of vehicles transporting petroleum products, containers and other essential goods could have serious consequences for commercial activities. He compared the congestion to the gridlock previously experienced around Apapa in Lagos State.

He appealed to the Federal Government to repair the collapsed section urgently or authorise emergency remedial work to restore movement on the highway.

Motorists and residents have also urged the federal and Ekiti State governments to create a temporary passage while arrangements are made for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the road.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not announced the commencement of repairs or the full reopening of the affected route.
