Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area occurred less than 24 hours after he declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.Makinde made the statement following the successful rescue of the abducted victims after 56 days in captivity.Security agencies reportedly arrested eight suspected kidnappers during the rescue operation, while other members of the criminal group were killed. The arrested suspects are currently being held by the Department of State Services for further investigation.The government also stated that no ransom, prisoner exchange or other concession was made to secure the victims’ release.Meanwhile, the family of Michael Oyedokun, a teacher reportedly killed during the abduction, has expressed mixed emotions following the rescue of the other victims.Although the family welcomed the safe return of the pupils and teachers, it said the release had renewed the pain of losing Oyedokun, whose death remains an irreparable loss to his relatives and community.Further details about the rescue operation and the prosecution of the arrested suspects are expected to be released by the relevant security agencies.
