ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said efforts to build a broader opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election are still alive, despite divisions that have weakened an earlier attempt to unite major opposition figures behind a single candidate.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party has not ruled out renewed negotiations with other opposition forces, maintaining that a united front would improve the chances of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on the party’s preparations for the 2027 contest, Abdullahi said the ADC remained convinced that cooperation among opposition parties and political interests would make the task of challenging the incumbent administration easier.
“We still have not given up the possibility,” Abdullahi said, explaining that the ADC was among the political forces that initiated the coalition-building effort.
He added that the party believes “the window has not closed” for opposition groups to work together ahead of the election.
In a separate interview with Arise News, Abdullahi said the original objective of the coalition was to bring opposition leaders together and, if possible, rally them behind a single presidential candidate.
According to him, presenting one candidate would reduce fragmentation of the opposition vote and make the challenge against the APC easier.
However, he stressed that failure to achieve a single opposition ticket would not automatically make Tinubu unbeatable.
Abdullahi said the ADC remained confident in its ability to compete in the presidential election even if negotiations for a wider coalition eventually failed.
“We are convinced that if we are able to build this coalition to produce a single presidential candidate, it makes the job of beating President Bola Tinubu in 2027 easier,” he said.
He, however, maintained that the party does not regard a broad coalition as the only route to electoral victory.
