Newly promoted Hull City made a sensational return to the English Premier League on Saturday, defeating Manchester United 2–0 at the MKM Stadium.

Nigerian international Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 18th minute, reacting quickly to convert a rebound after United failed to clear Hull’s threat from a set piece.

Nobel Mendy doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 38th minute, again exposing Manchester United’s defensive weakness at a set piece. The two first-half goals gave Hull firm control of the match and sent the home supporters into celebration.

Manchester United dominated possession and created several opportunities but were unable to break down Hull’s organised defence. Manager Michael Carrick introduced Marcus Rashford in the second half in an attempt to rescue the game, but the visitors failed to find a response.

The victory marked Hull City’s first league win over Manchester United in 52 years and provided a memorable return to the Premier League after nine seasons outside the English top flight.

For Ajayi, the goal underlined his importance to the Tigers and provided an encouraging moment for Nigerian football supporters at the beginning of the 2026–27 season.

The defeat, however, placed early pressure on Carrick and raised fresh concerns about Manchester United’s defending and overall preparedness for the new campaign.

Carrick admitted after the match that his players were disappointed but urged supporters not to panic, insisting that the opening-day setback would not alter the club’s long-term direction.

Hull will next travel to face Coventry City, while Manchester United will seek an immediate response when they play Ipswich Town.
