Glasgow, Scotland — Team Nigeria has launched its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in impressive fashion, securing a gold medal and two silver medals in Para Powerlifting to underline the country’s strength in one of its most successful sporting disciplines.

Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games came through Esther Nworgu, who produced a commanding performance to win the women’s lightweight Para Powerlifting event. The victory was made even more remarkable as compatriot Esther Oyema claimed the silver medal, giving Nigeria a memorable one-two finish in the competition.

The country’s medal tally increased later in the day when Roland Ezuruike earned silver in the men’s lightweight Para Powerlifting category, capping a successful opening day for the Nigerian contingent.

The early medal haul briefly propelled Team Nigeria to the top of the Commonwealth Games medal table, reinforcing the country’s reputation as one of the leading forces in Para Powerlifting on the international stage.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, taking place from July 23 to August 2, feature athletes from across the Commonwealth competing in a streamlined programme of 10 sports. Nigeria is represented in several events, including athletics, boxing, wrestling, judo, swimming, weightlifting, basketball, and Para Powerlifting.

With the Para Powerlifting team already delivering podium finishes, attention now shifts to Nigeria’s athletes in other disciplines as the country seeks to add to its medal count in the coming days. Boxer David Akintola is among the Nigerian athletes expected to be in action as competition intensifies in Glasgow.

Sports analysts believe Nigeria’s encouraging start could provide the momentum needed for a successful campaign, particularly in sports where the nation has traditionally excelled.

As the Games continue, expectations remain high that Team Nigeria will build on its early success and challenge for more medals, especially in powerlifting, wrestling, boxing, and athletics.
